Script vs. knowledge

The script is the conversation guardrail, knowledge is the factual basis. This article explains how both layers work together in a call.

Script and knowledge at a glance

In Nexcal, the script and knowledge serve different purposes. The script is the conversation guardrail: it defines how the voice agent opens the call, in which order it covers the key points and how it leads toward the campaign goal. Knowledge, by contrast, is the factual basis: it provides the information the agent draws on when the prospect asks questions.

The two layers work together but do not replace each other. A good script without solid knowledge leaves questions unanswered. Extensive knowledge without a clear script leads to conversations with no thread.

The script as a conversation guardrail

The script describes the intended flow of the conversation. The agent phrases things naturally within these settings and may adjust the order slightly, for example when the prospect raises a topic earlier than planned. The script defines:

  • how the call is opened;
  • which core messages are conveyed;
  • how the agent transitions toward the campaign goal;
  • when a booking or callback is offered.

You create the script in the campaign area. For details, see creating the conversation script.

Knowledge as the factual basis

Knowledge answers the question of what the agent knows about your company and your offer. It contains facts, FAQs and background the agent uses when questions come up. Knowledge does not steer the flow of the conversation; it makes sure answers are accurate and consistent.

Importantly, the agent does not invent information. If a detail is missing from knowledge, the agent makes that clear instead of speculating. For setup, see configuring knowledge.

How the two work together

  1. The script guides the conversation.
  2. When the prospect asks a question, the agent draws on knowledge.
  3. After answering, the agent returns to the script and the campaign goal.

Hinweis: When the script and knowledge contradict each other, conversations become unclear. Keep both layers aligned and up to date.
